Welcome to Rubin’s cosmic treasure chest!
June 123, 2025
The Vera C. Rubin Observatory has released one of its first stunning images, showcasing a rich and colorful section of the Universe filled with stars and galaxies from the southern Virgo Cluster, 55 million light-years away. Captured with the world’s largest digital camera, the 3200-megapixel LSST Camera, this image represents just a fraction of what Rubin will achieve over its 10-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time. Composed of 1185 exposures over 7 nights, it reveals intricate cosmic details from Milky Way stars to distant galaxies and Solar System asteroids. Rubin’s unmatched imaging capabilities will allow scientists to map the Milky Way, catalog Solar System objects, track changes in the night sky, and probe fundamental questions about dark matter, dark energy, and the formation of the Universe … Read More

REUNA Hosted AmLight’s Annual SA3CC Meeting to Advance Global Astronomy Connectivity
May 5-9, 2025
REUNA hosted the annual South American Astronomy Coordination Committee (SA3CC) meeting in La Serena, Chile. Organized under the NSF-funded AmLight project, this key event brought together major astronomical observatories and advanced research and education networks to collaborate on the high-performance connectivity required for data-intensive astronomy in the region. Participants included representatives from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, AmLight, ESnet, Internet2, and other leading institutions. Discussions focused on the technical and operational needs for transferring massive volumes of astronomical data, such as Rubin’s anticipated 20 terabytes of nightly images, to international data centers in near real time. The meeting highlighted Chile’s strategic role in global astronomy and REUNA’s critical support in ensuring seamless data movement across continents. A follow-up technical session addressed fine-tuning the Long-Haul Network (LHN), the global backbone essential to Rubin’s success as it prepares to go fully online later this year. Special thanks to REUNA for hosting and supporting this vital collaboration! … English | Spanish

A Summer of Cyberinfrastructure
July 23, 2025
The Student Training and Engagement Program (STEP), part of the NSF’s ACCESS initiative, offers undergraduate students immersive, hands-on exposure to careers in cyberinfrastructure (CI), including areas like high-performance computing, cybersecurity, networking, and data science. During the two-week STEP-1 program held in May 2025 at Florida International University, students worked closely with experienced mentors, explored advanced research facilities like FIU’s Wall of Wind and M1 Equinix Data Center, and participated in technical workshops ranging from Unix to cloud computing. Led by Rob Quick from Indiana University and supported by experts like Vasilka Chergarova of FIU, the program emphasized both technical training and professional mentorship. Students came from diverse academic backgrounds and expressed enthusiasm for the practical experience, especially highlights like cybersecurity labs and a boat trip to view underwater data sensors. With its focus on skill-building, mentorship, and community, STEP continues to empower the next generation of CI professionals, many of whom are already launching successful careers in the field … Read More
