AmLight Shines at SC25 With Record-Breaking Network Performance and Global Collaboration

November 2025

AmLight achieved a major milestone at SC25, delivering more than 1.5 Tbps of bidirectional traffic from Latin America to the conference show floor more than double the throughput achieved at SC24, which peaked at under 0.7 Tbps. The accomplishment drew strong praise across the international research networking community, including from Harvey Newman of Caltech, who highlighted AmLight’s outstanding performance and the contributions of its users and members such as Rednesp, RNP, UEFS, Unesp, and USP. This achievement was made possible thanks to broad support from AmLight’s global partners. Angola Cables provided a dedicated channel for SC25, Ciena loaned a Waveserver 5 chassis, ESnet contributed a Waveserver 6E transponder, and OpenGlobe supplied 4×400G transceivers in Brazil. Network providers also played a key role, with Lumen delivering a 400G link from St. Louis to Miami, Verizon providing dual 100G circuits, and Zayo offering a 400G link from St. Louis to Atlanta … Read More

FABRIC Expands High-Speed Connectivity with New 100-Gigabit Link Between Miami and Atlanta

December 17, 2025

FABRIC successfully deployed a dedicated 100-gigabit network link connecting its Miami edge node at Florida International University (FIU) to a core FABRIC site in Atlanta. This connection enhanced the strength of FABRIC’s nationwide footprint and provides researchers with a high-capacity, Layer 1 path designed specifically for reproducible, experimental networking at scale. The link, one of two 100-gigabit connections at the FIU site, serves as a critical piece of infrastructure enabling controlled, end-to-end experiments between FABRIC’s programmable resources. As FIU’s Jeronimo Bezerra noted, the dedicated fiber “ensures FABRIC can achieve its reproducible goals… because there’s nobody else on that link other than FABRIC” … Read More

Simons Observatory marks first year of studying cosmic origins

October 25, 2025

The Simons Observatory, one of the world’s most powerful ground-based cosmological facilities, is located at 5,200 meters atop Cerro Toco in Chile’s Atacama Desert, a region that has made Chile the global capital of astronomy due to its exceptional observing conditions. Comprising three Small Aperture Telescopes and one Large Aperture Telescope, the observatory is designed to collect the most precise measurements yet of the Cosmic Microwave Background while also studying black holes, solar system objects, and time-variable phenomena. Since beginning early scientific operations, the observatory has been connected through REUNA to global research and education networks, enabling rapid, secure data transfer to U.S. data centers and replacing the former practice of physically shipping hard drives. This high-speed connectivity supports near–real-time data analysis and alerts for transient cosmic events, significantly enhancing scientific collaboration and discovery through a coordinated national and international effort … Read More

Magallanes positions itself as a new scientific hub with the launch of the Patagonia Project PoP

July 2025

The inauguration of REUNA’s new Point of Presence in Magallanes and the Chilean Antarctic Territory marks a major milestone in strengthening advanced connectivity in Chile’s southernmost region, enabling a robust ecosystem for science, education, and innovation. As part of the Patagonia Project led by MinCiencia through ANID, with support from the Regional Government, this new PoP extends REUNA’s network by 42% with more than 1,300 kilometers of new infrastructure, connecting key institutions such as UMAG, INACH, and regional research centers to high-speed, dedicated networks. This enhanced connectivity supports the secure transfer of large scientific datasets and satellite imagery, integrates the Southern Macrozone into global research initiatives, and positions Magallanes as a strategic scientific hub and gateway to Antarctica, laying the foundation for future projects such as the Antarctic Cable and reinforcing Chile’s role in data-driven, frontier research … Read More
