Seven leading regional and national Research and Education networks and organisations across multiple continents announced the establishment of the “Bridging Europe, Africa and the Americas” (BEAA) Collaboration<\/strong>, aiming to increase the resilience of their networks across a set of transoceanic links that interconnect their communities in Eastern and Southern Africa, Europe and Latin America.<\/p>\n

The BEAA Collaboration was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed between Amlight<\/a>\/the Florida International University Board of Trustees<\/a>, G\u00c9ANT<\/a>, RedCLARA<\/a>, RNP<\/a>, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)<\/a>, TENET<\/a> and the UbuntuNet Alliance<\/a>. All partners agreed to collaborate for an initial period of three years, by providing mutual back-up through high-capacity links and resources.<\/p>\n

Back-up connectivity enabled by the agreement will ensure that advanced Research and Education collaborations among the regions will continue even in case of service outages. Participating organisations will use the capacity provided by the agreed back-up arrangements to carry high volumes of data required for data-intensive research, including \u2013 notably \u2013 Earth Observation (EO) data of the European Union’s Copernicus programme<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Opening a new chapter in the R&E collaboration between Europe, Africa and the Americas, the BEAA agreement showcases an increasingly resilient, flexible and interconnected global R&E networking ecosystem, apt to support scientists worldwide in tackling the big scientific challenges of our times.<\/p>\n

CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) <\/strong>is a statutory body established and operating in terms of the Scientific Research Council Act, No 46 of 1988 as amended and hosts the South African National Research Network (SANReN) as a business unit inside the National Integrated Cyber Infrastructure System (NICIS) Centre. RNP (Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa) <\/strong>is the Brazilian National Education and Research Network (NREN). It was created in 1989, the network started to operate in 1992. Currently it operates a national wide backbone, own metropolitan networks in capitals and inland cities, international links, with 27 points of presence, one on each of the 26 Brazilian states and on the Federal District, and connects over 4 million users, at 1.700 campuses of 800 institutions, supporting a portfolio of services addressed to the education and research communities.<\/p>\n
